Water is the essence of life — about 60% of an adult body is water, including a brain and heart that are roughly 73% water. When you don't drink enough, every one of those organs feels it. Even mild dehydration can leave you moody, foggy, and forgetful, and can nudge blood sugar higher because there's less water to dilute the glucose in your blood.
So staying hydrated matters. The question is what you add to your water to make it appealing.
A better way to enhance your water
You can absolutely make water more interesting without working against your health. Add real fruit, a small dash of salt, or a magnesium-rich mineral mix to help your body actually absorb and use the water rather than just sending you to the bathroom. Fruits and vegetables rich in minerals do the same. If you buy an electrolyte mix, read the label and steer clear of artificial sweeteners.
What artificial sweeteners really do
Aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, and acesulfame potassium are synthetic substitutes 200 to 660 times sweeter than sugar with few or no calories. They're marketed as a smart choice — especially for people watching their blood sugar — but research suggests two real downsides.
- Blood sugar and insulin. Even though they contain no glucose, their intense sweetness may trigger the pancreas to release insulin in anticipation of sugar that never arrives. Over time, studies link frequent use to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and to worsening insulin resistance.
- Gut health. Emerging research shows artificial sweeteners can disrupt the balance of bacteria in your gut microbiome, favoring the harmful bacteria associated with insulin resistance and fat storage over the beneficial ones that help regulate blood sugar.
Spice up your water, naturally
There's no replacement for water, but you can give it plenty of personality without artificial additives:
- Fresh fruit like lemon, lime, or watermelon
- A little pure stevia leaf or monk fruit when you want sweetness
- Unsweetened decaf herbal teas — hibiscus adds flavor and supports healthy blood pressure
Brew a pitcher, keep it cold, and a simple squeeze of lemon will carry you a long way.
